PROOF DOC
PROOF is a simple utility program that will analyze any sequential
file that is saved in ASCII format. PROOF first reads the file from
disk, and then prints to the screen or printer the following information:
1. The number of words in the file.
2. The number of words composed of 11 or more letters.
3. The number of sentences in the file.
4. The average number of words per sentence.
5. The readability level of the writing.
The number of words composed of nine or more letters, is used to give
you an indication of how many long words you have in your document.
The readability of the file refers to the fact that most articles are
written for a level slightly below that of the expected reading level of
your intended audience.
Therefore, if the level in the analysis varies greatly from what you
believe will be your intended audience, then perhaps some revision is
deemed necessary to make the article more understandable and enjoyable to
read. This index is usually referred to as the FOG INDEX.
THE FOG INDEX
In 1952 Robert Gunning, (1908 - 1980), put forth the concept of the Fog
Index. Researchers have learned that people prefer to read below their edu
cational level. For example, most magazines and newspapers are written with
a reader index of grades 6 - 8. People can read at higher levels, but the
concentration required can make such reading tedious.
Gunning therefore came up with an algorithm to act as a readability yard
stick to test clear writing. The algorithm was:
INDEX = .4 * (G / F + E * 100 / G)
G = TOTAL WORDS, F = TOTAL SENTENCES, E = TOTAL WORDS OF 11 OR MORE LETTERS
The resulting number when rounded to two decimal places would be the same
as the number of years of educational reading level.
USING THE PROGRAM
The program is very simple to use. For the best results it is better to
have your file single spaced and unformated. Then save your sequential file
to disk as pure ASCII, exit your word processor. At the DOS prompt enter
PROOF and press ENTER. After the title screen, you are asked to enter the
name of the file that you want to ana-lyze, and the drive and path where
the file can be located. The program will read in any length file and as it
does it will display it on your screen and analyze it. You will then be
asked if you want the results of the analysis sent to your screen or
printer. If you chose to have the results sent to the printer, be sure that
it is configured as LPT1.
After the results are displayed or printed you are given the option of run
ning another analysis or exiting the program.
SHAREWARE/LICENSE AGREEMENT
SHAREWARE
It is extremely expensive to bring a software product to the market
in today's environment. The user supported software concept known as
SHAREWARE provides a method whereby individual authors and small
companies can market their products without incurring staggering
advertising and promotional costs.
The user benefits in two ways. First, the user may test the
product before purchasing and second, the user receives a quality
product at low cost.
This concept can only work with your support. If you find that you
can use this product (or any other user supported software package),
then we would appreciate a contribution to help defray the cost of
this product and further development of new products.
We suggest a contribution of $5.95 per machine.
Please note, that only registered users will be notified of updates.
